Championing high quality dance in Primary schools across Norfolk
slanteddance have been working with five beacon schools from across the county that have shown a commitment to providing high quality dance, health and well being within their curriculum. The 5 schools are delighted to have been invited to perform on the Norfolk Music Hub ‘Woodlands stage’ at the Royal Norfolk Show on Thursday 28th June.
The mixed ages of Year 1 to Year 6 celebrate how schools are providing a creative and effective curriculum within an ever evolving and challenging National Curriculum.
“Working with schools who place a central focus on developing their students creativity and health in addition to their academic skills is inspiring and overwhelming. Every child, regardless of their skill base is valued and nurtured so they build their confidence to work as a team, share their ideas and perform. So many Norfolk schools are achieving so many wonderful things and we are excited to celebrate that.” Bryony Moore, slanteddance co-director and tutor.
Since slanteddance was founded in 2009, their company delivers workshops in schools and the community each week to over 500 children. More recently the team has gone from strength to strength developing workshops, teacher training and educational resources that over 400 teachers across the Country have accessed to improve the quality of dance within schools.
“Dance has the potential to engage, enthuse and bring alive children who love to be creative and imaginative. It embraces more than the opportunity to dance, cultural awareness, team work, cooperation, all combined with high levels of physical activity supporting improved well-being. A subject that adds so much to any school curriculum and gives an alternative road to success for many.” Kevin Holland, PE Specialist Education Advisor, Educator Solutions, Norfolk County Council.
This term the Norwich based company have worked with children from Garrick Green Infant School, Happisburgh Primary School, Harleston Primary School, Ashleigh Primary School and Tacolneston Primary School to create dance routines based on lessons from their everyday school life. Every group has not only developed their dance skills but have developed their creativity and expressions by creating their own choreography for the final piece. “I’ve liked learning new skills, trying new styles of dance and how to become a strong performer” Pupils at Happisburgh Primary School.
Also performing are the slanteddance Performance and Classical Squads who are students aged 5-13yrs and will be representing their collective 23 schools from across Norfolk by showcasing their dance skills in their full length performance of ‘Life Through our Lens’ which is an energetic and vibrant show that puts a creative slant on what life is like being a child in 2018.
Performances are on the Woodlands Stage Thursday 28th June at 10am (Schools) and 11.10am (Performance Squad).
